For the past few days, children in many countries have been returning to school after the hottest summer on record. Schools are changing and adapting to the challenges of our time. Social media, screens and, more recently, artificial intelligence present as many opportunities as pitfalls for students and teachers to avoid. The times also dictate that some countries, such as France, are experiencing a shortage of teachers, who are not sufficiently remunerated and recognised. The start of the new school year in France has also been marked by the scourge of bullying, which took the life of a secondary school student earlier this week.
Education is a human right that is essential to the development of our societies. Last year, according to UNESCO figures, more than 240 million children around the world did not attend school, including young Afghan girls, who were deprived of this fundamental right by the Taliban.
