Artificial intelligence: conclusion of the Paris summit

Editorial published on February 13, 2025

The international summit on artificial intelligence (AI), held in Paris on 10 and 11 February, put the excitement and concern surrounding this technological revolution back at the heart of public and media debate. France and India co-hosted the event, which brought together heads of state, experts and tech bosses in an attempt to coordinate and control the development of this technology, in which most rich countries are preparing to invest billions. The discussions culminated in a declaration in favour of ‘open’, ‘ethical’ and ‘inclusive’ AI, and for a ‘global dialogue’ aimed at avoiding ‘market concentration’. The United Kingdom, but above all the United States, the market leader, refused to sign the declaration. US Vice-President J. D. Vance regretted ‘excessive regulation’, and warned against the use of AI by ‘totalitarian regimes’. In other words, China and its company Deepseek, Chat GPT’s main competitor.

The creation of an observatory to monitor the energy impact of artificial intelligence was also announced, to address the major environmental issues involved, given that the use of artificial intelligence is particularly energy-intensive. The next AI summit will take place in India.
