3 May, World Press Freedom Day: freedom of expression as a cornerstone of human rights

For the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO has chosen the United Nations headquarters to celebrate the event, which this year has a human rights theme: “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Cornerstone of Human Rights”.

A new UNESCO analysis, based on data collected in 180 countries, shows a strong correlation between freedom of expression and respect for human rights: countries where freedom of expression is most respected have significantly higher levels of protection of civil, political, economic and social rights. It is “the essential element for the enjoyment and protection of all other human rights,” the organisation said in its statement.

This is also why, once again, Cartooning for Peace and UNESCO have joined forces for the occasion.
