111 days of war between Israel and Hamas

The fighting continues to intensify in the south of the Gaza Strip, in Khan Younès, where there are countless Palestinian civilian victims and where on Monday 21 January the Israeli army suffered its heaviest toll since 7 October, with 24 soldiers killed in one day, most of them reservists. The human cost of this war is beginning to raise doubts even within Israeli society, which is not seeing the return of its hostages. The release of the hostages is the subject of negotiations for a two-month humanitarian truce and new prisoner exchanges. Israel’s Western allies – including the United States – are stepping up the pressure on the Hebrew State for a ceasefire and a two-state peace solution, which Benjamin Netanyahu cannot envisage. The matter has been referred to the International Court of Justice by South Africa, which is accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza. The Court is due to hand down its decision on Friday 26 January.
