Sayed Ali Mosavi, better known as Ali Mosavi Sam, is an Afghan cartoonist and architect living in Hamburg. He has been drawing professionally since 2019. Before the fall of Kabul in August 2021, he contributed to several Afghan publications, including 8am Daily, Ammaj News and The Kabul Times. During this period, his work focused mainly on socio-political issues, including criticism of the Afghan government and the Taliban. After August 2021, he was forced to leave Afghanistan due to increasing threats against artists and cartoonists. He arrived in Germany with the support of Cartooning for Peace, whom he first contacted in August 2021 and to whom he is very grateful. From Hamburg, he receives a grant from the New York-based Artist Protection Fund. Thanks to this grant, he is continuing his artistic practice and recently organised and participated in two exhibitions in Hamburg, including one on women’s rights in Afghanistan featuring works by leading Afghan cartoonists.
