20 June, World Refugee Day, established by the UN in 2001, is an opportunity to highlight the importance of protecting people forced to flee their countries due to conflict, persecution, violence or humanitarian crises.
To mark the occasion, Européens Sans Frontières and Cartooning for Peace, in partnership with Affabulazione, are highlighting an awareness-raising initiative focusing on hospitality, exile and solidarity, with the support of the Erasmus+ programme.
This initiative uses art, imagery and young people’s participation to open up a dialogue on migration journeys, fundamental rights and the realities faced by refugees. It encourages us to move beyond prejudice and to view these situations with humanity, care and a sense of collective responsibility.
This initiative is based on two editorial cartoons by Boligán (Mexico) and Fahd Bahady (Syria), members of Cartooning for Peace. Through the power of imagery, humour and satire, these works address issues relating to exile, reception and dignity in an accessible and engaging way.
Broadcast by Trace TV to mark 20 June, this initiative serves as a reminder that solidarity with refugees directly concerns our societies, our democratic values and our shared future.
