Since the beginning of January, the city of Minneapolis (Minnesota, United States) has become a symbol of violence by federal immigration police and a certain authoritarian drift under Trumpism. ICE and Border Patrol forces are hunting down suspected migrants, including children, in a climate of violence that has led to two tragedies. After the killing of Renée Nicole Good by ICE on 7 January, Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, was shot dead on 24 January by the Border Patrol. Contrary to eyewitness accounts and video footage of both events, the government accused the victims of terrorism and supported the law enforcement agencies involved.
This intolerable situation has led to major protests and strong criticism of Trump from local elected officials, the media, and former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. Donald Trump has finally made a slight about-face in recent days, saying he was moved by the two killings. The more than 3,000 federal agents deployed to Minneapolis have been ordered to gradually leave the city.
