The wait was long and laborious but, after 48 hours of negotiations, European leaders finally reached an agreement on Tuesday, July 2, on appointments to key positions in the European Union.
Ursula Von der Leyen, German Defence Minister, will head the EU Commission. Charles Michel, Belgian Prime Minister, is appointed President of the European Council. Christine Lagarde will have to leave the IMF to head the European Central Bank. Josep Borell, the current Spanish Foreign Minister, will be the EU’s new head of diplomacy. The Italian David Sassoli will preside over the European Parliament.
New faces resolutely pro-European, a respected geographical balance, a displayed parity…. Perhaps enough to start over on a good basis to save Europe…?
