War in Ukraine: Russia Under Pressure

In recent months, Ukraine has intensified its strikes on Russian territory and in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in response to Moscow’s near-daily bombardments. Ukrainian missiles and drones are gaining range, to the point that Zelensky claims to have opened a “corridor” through the air defense system toward Moscow. Kyiv has made oil infrastructure a priority target in order to cut off the main source of funding for Russia’s war effort. In the space of a week, the country’s main oil refinery, in Ufa, was struck twice. These attacks are causing fuel shortages, and Russians are lining up for gasoline. Putin’s obsessive war is becoming increasingly unpopular among the Russian population, including parts of the military. On the night of July 2–3, Kyiv suffered a particularly massive retaliatory attack that left at least 13 people dead.
