With 2026 barely underway, Donald Trump took the world by surprise by attacking Venezuela and kidnapping Nicolás Maduro. After several months of tension between the two countries, the US military carried out an attack on Caracas during the night of 2 to 3 January to kidnap the Venezuelan president and his wife. The offensive, carried out without a prior declaration of war, reportedly left around 100 people dead, according to local authorities. Nicolás Maduro, in power since 2013, is accused by Donald Trump of heading a drug trafficking cartel, for which he has been on trial in a New York court since Monday.
The fight against Venezuelan drug trafficking is nothing more than a pretext for getting hold of the world’s largest oil reserves. The United States is returning to its old imperialist habits and the forcible confiscation of strategic and economic assets. International reactions are divided: should we rejoice at the fall of an illegitimately elected dictator who has caused eight million Venezuelans to flee, or condemn a clear violation of international law with serious consequences? Donald Trump is already threatening other countries: Cuba, Colombia, Mexico and Iran, but above all Greenland, where he plans to use military force very soon.
