On 5 November, the American people go to the polls to decide whether Donald Trump or Kamala Harris will occupy the White House from 2025 to 2029. After a colourful campaign, most polls suggest that the election will be closer than ever. Once again, it will be the famous ‘swing states’ that will tip the balance. Kamala Harris, who got her campaign off to a flying start last July, faces a Donald Trump whose aggressive rhetoric towards his rival has recently boosted his poll ratings. He is also backed by Elon Musk, the richest man in the world and owner of the X social network, where the MAGA movement’s disinformation campaigns have free rein. There are many dividing lines in American society on which this election will be fought: immigration, abortion, purchasing power, etc. And the impact of this election on international politics, given the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East in particular, is as feared as it is expected.
