The return of war in Europe, the conflagration in the Middle East, and Donald Trump’s ineptitudes since his return to the White House have pushed environmental issues to the back burner of international concerns. Yet the urgency is there, clearer than ever. The UN’s World Meteorological Organization (WMO) published a report on May 28 predicting warming of more than 1.5°C over the period 2025-2029. A trend that “shows no sign of respite,” according to the report’s authors, and which likely makes the Paris Agreement’s objective unattainable.
The years 2023 and 2024 were the hottest on record, as was the last decade. They have given a glimpse of the concrete dangers of global warming on our lives: floods, fires, hurricanes, droughts, melting ice… Since the world has not been able to tackle the causes of global warming in time, it will have to battle with its very serious consequences.
