The double challenge of the Paralympics

Editorial published on September 05, 2024

The Olympic Games, which lit up Paris and enchanted France and the whole world in August, gave way on 28 August, as tradition dictates, to the Paralympic Games. Since their creation in 1948 and their inclusion in the Olympic Games in 1960, these games, reserved for athletes with a motor, visual or mental disability, have provided an opportunity for great sporting performances, but also for raising awareness about disability. They give visibility to the one billion people (more than 15% of the world’s population) with a disability, and promote more inclusive access to sport. The 2024 edition, which comes to an end this week, has been a great success with the public, both on television and in the stadiums. This is a positive sign, given that there is still huge scope for progress when it comes to the integration, mobility and quality of life of disabled people around the world.
