On Tuesday 16 September, the Israeli army launched a large-scale ground offensive towards Gaza City with the aim of ‘intensifying strikes against Hamas until its final defeat’. Nearly 500,000 Gazans, called upon to evacuate the area, were forced to flee the city in utter destitution. ‘Gaza is burning,’ the Israeli Defence Minister rejoiced with utter cynicism. As international outrage continues to grow, the European Commission is taking a tougher stance and considering sanctions against Israel by imposing higher taxes on its products imported into the EU. Several countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Belgium and Australia, have announced their intention to recognise the Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly on 22 September.
