Electoral crisis in Gabon

On August 27th, the presidential election took place in Gabon. On August 31st, the electoral commission announced the election results: Ali Bongo was narrowly re-elected by 5 000 votes over his opponent, Jean Ping. Suspicion of electoral fraud caused violent riots, which were repressed (at least 5 people died). Each side suspects the other of ballot rigging. On September 8th, Jean Ping appealed to the Constitutional Court for a vote recount in the province of Haut-Ogooué, Bongo’s stronghold.

France, who had privileged relations with Gabon, during Omar Bongo’s period  in office (he ruled the country from 1967 until his death in 2009), has no news of several French expats and is very concerned…
