Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has published a new report detailing the Chinese regime’s efforts to impose its propaganda on the global media landscape. Since 2012, Chinese leader Xi Jinping has been striving to promote a “new world media order” in which facts are suppressed in favour of propaganda and where repression is meted out to anyone reporting truths that displease his government.
“China is attempting to establish its own standards and its own model of ‘journalism’ – a model in which the media are accountable only to the regime and are regarded as a tool for propaganda and control, rather than as an independent pillar of democracy. What is even more worrying is that China is collaborating closely with other authoritarian regimes, such as Putin’s Russia, to strengthen their grip on the global information space and transform journalism as we know it on an international scale. We hope that this report will shed further light on these tactics and provide our democracies with a shield to protect our information space – before it is too late. ”
