150 editorial cartoons to bring democracy to life

Democracy is faltering and threatens to unleash monsters: with the return of power struggles and conflicts, the global geopolitical balance has been thrown into disarray. Political, social, economic and environmental crises are multiplying, and there is no shortage of reasons to be concerned about the future. Against this backdrop, how can we revitalise a democracy that seems to be running out of steam?

The cartoonists at Cartooning for Peace are determined not to give in and believe that the struggle for democracy – far from being on its last legs – needs to regain its full vitality in these rapidly changing times. The art, humour, critical thinking and irreverence of political cartoons, just like the commitment of civil society, are excellent antidotes to the dark forces that threaten us and further proof that another world is always possible.

To mark its 20th anniversary, Cartooning for Peace invites readers to reflect and take action through this book on struggle and resistance. Illustrated with 150 cartoons from around the world, it features essays by leading experts – Gilles Finchelstein, Secretary-General of the Jean-Jaurès Foundation; Sylvie Kauffmann, journalist at *Le Monde*; Magali Lafourcade, magistrate and Secretary-General of the CNCDH; Thibaut Bruttin, Director-General of Reporters Without Borders; Paula Forteza, founder of Artivistas and former co-chair of Démocratie ouverte – and a afterword by Amnesty International.
