GUILLO

Chile

Guillo – born Guillermo Bastías – began his career as a cartoonist at APSI magazine during the Chilean dictatorship (1973–1990), where he managed to publish satirical cartoons despite the regime’s strict censorship. A self-proclaimed advocate of ‘editorial cartoons that neither bow down nor pander to the tastes of employers, fearful editors and press bosses’, Guillo has collaborated with numerous national and international media outlets. To avoid the censorship that continued after the dictatorship, Guillo began to deliver his sharp reflections through virtual means: on his own website, Humor Libre (until around 2011) and his social networks. Guillo is the author of a dozen books and has won numerous awards in Chile and abroad.
