Firas Bachi, a Syrian-American visual artist and cartoonist, works as a creative director in advertising. Born in Damascus in 1979, he grew up in Syria and Saudi Arabia. He currently lives in the United States. Firas Bachi’s political cartoons, known as ‘CaricaToonz,’ are published in magazines, exhibitions, on his website, and on social media. Beginning in the 1990s, Bachi faced restrictions due to systemic corruption and limited freedom of expression in Syria and the Arab world. He turned to caricature portraits and graphic design, but returned to political caricature during the 2011 Syrian revolution, using social media to share his art on the Syrian war and global and social issues. Since 2011, he has participated in art exhibitions and global events in Europe, Canada, Turkey, and the Arab world, and his work has been featured in notable publications such as Newsweek and Global Voices.
