Southern Europe is currently experiencing an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece and the south of France. Hospitals are reporting an increase in admissions for dehydration and heatstroke, and two deaths have already been reported in Spain. Several areas have been placed on red alert and the authorities are urging caution, particularly for the elderly, the chronically ill and children. In France, almost 2,000 schools have had to close for safety reasons.
The heatwave is also encouraging forest fires, of which there are many in Spain, Portugal and Greece, and the drought is complicating the situation in rural areas. According to experts, these heatwaves, directly linked to global warming, are set to become more frequent and more intense.
