Donald Trump officially took office as the 47th President of the United States on Monday 20 January, at the end of an inauguration day watched by the whole world. It was a strange day, marked by a polar cold that brought the ceremony inside the Capitol to a standstill, and by Elon Musk’s double fascist salute at the inauguration meeting* – quite a symbol…
On Monday, Donald Trump signed a record number of executive orders, among the hundred or so he had prepared for the start of his term of office. He signed, among other things, anti-immigration laws, a presidential pardon for the Capitol assailants and the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris agreements.
On the international stage, Donald Trump will apply his ‘America First’ principle. He intends to overhaul the world order under the banner of power, following in the footsteps of his Russian and Chinese counterparts. He is seeking to emancipate himself from international law and its institutions, from dialogue and alliances. Europe, whether in strategic or commercial terms, will be the first to bear the brunt of this new Trump era.
*Elon Musk has once again justified the decision by Cartooning for Peace and other media and NGOs to leave social network X (Twitter), via the HelloQuitteX campaign.
