It is already a year since the massacre perpetrated by Hamas on Israeli territory set the Middle East ablaze. On 7 October 2023, the Islamist party in power in Gaza led an assault of rare violence around the Palestinian enclave, the clear aim of which was to kill Israelis, whoever they might be. 1,200 people were killed, including 815 civilians, and 250 hostages were taken in Gaza, most of whom have since died.
The attack triggered a merciless Israeli response the very next day, led by Benyamin Netanyahu and his far-right government. Tsahal’s bombardments and ground operations in Gaza, with the stated aim of destroying Hamas and freeing hostages, have resulted in more than 41,000 deaths in a year, most of them civilians.
The powerlessness of the international community is clear: all diplomatic attempts at a ceasefire have been doomed to failure. The intervention of Hezbollah and Iran in this disastrous theatre of war, and the recent opening of a new front in Lebanon by the Israeli army, have aggravated the situation, gradually silencing the last optimistic voices about the future of the Middle East.
