Gaza: fighting in Rafah sparks outrage

Editorial published on May 30, 2024

Since the beginning of the month, the Israeli army has been pounding Rafah against the advice of the international community. On Monday 27 May, a camp for displaced persons, despite being considered a ‘humanitarian zone’ by the Israeli army, was bombed, killing dozens of civilians. A ‘tragic mistake’ according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu… A war crime indeed, and one that has sparked outrage around the world. In the face of the horror, calls for a ceasefire and protest movements multiplied, including in the United States and within Israeli society itself.

A week earlier, Karim Khan, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, struck a major blow by calling for an arrest warrant for Netanyahu, his war minister and three Hamas leaders. This week, Norway, Ireland and Spain undertook to officially recognise the Palestinian state as a necessary condition for achieving peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
