It looks like that everyone knows the answer to the big question! Being in office since 12 years, Chancellor Angela Merkel seems to reassure German voters towards troubling international news and events (Brexit, Trump’s government, terrorism, etc). The results of the legislative elections on Sunday 24th September should not surprise anyone.
During her campaign, considered as lugubrious and boring, Angela Merkel (CDU) and her opponent Martin Schulz (SPD) didn’t try to differentiate themselves through their programs and proposals. This is particularly relevant regarding the refugees and Turkey issues, since the two political parties are long-standing coalition partners in the government since 2013.
What is at stake here is rather the post-election than the election itself: what kind of coalition is going to emerge? Which party will become Germany’s third political force? Will the AfD, the Eurosceptic and islamophobic party, make its way to the Bundestag? To be continued…
