Lebanon: Priscilla Bassil wins “La Plume de Pierre” Trophy, handed over by Plantu

Priscilla Bassil, a young Lebanese student, wins the first prize throughout the inaugural edition of the Trophy « La Plume de Pierre », Thursday March, 2nd, place under the patronage of French caricaturist Plantu. The Trophy « La Plume de Pierre », takes place in Beyrouth, Lebanon, and aims at rewarding the best press cartoons drawn by arts students.

The new competition is the result of the association of the Presse Citron Trophy, the Alba (the Lebanese Arts Academy) and the “Pierre Sadek” Foundation. Sponsored by Plantu, president of Cartooning for Peace, this first edition opened on several tributes to the mythical Lebanese cartoonists Pierre Sadek, deceased in 2013.

The Foundation which bears his name now organizes every year this major press cartoon event in Lebanon. The Foundation also aims at promoting the essential values associated to the press cartoon such as social responsibility, democracy, participation and development.

To all Lebanese people and (Lebanese) sects : Good night country ! On sharks’ fins : Shiite, Druze, Orthodox, Sunnite, Maronite, Catholic.

Priscilla Bassil, student at the Saint-Esprit University of Kaslik, receives the first prize from the hands of the sponsor Plantu, Ghada Sadek Abela (Pierre Sadek’s daughter) and the Culture and Information ministers Ghattas Khoury and Melhem Riachi.

Through her cartoon representing Lebanon encircled by religions as sharks roaming around and threatening the country, the young woman wants to symbolize « the protestation of a certain every-day life ». Furthermore, the three laureates of the competition are invited to come to Paris to attend the Presse Citron Trophy award ceremony.
