On this Friday 6th of June, the trade war should take a new twist between two big economic powerhouses, the United States and China. This day marks entry into force of custom duties of 25% on 818 Chinese products imported from the United States. China already planned to fight back with the same tariffs of 25% on some American products (such as soya, meat and automobiles). However, the first hostilities appeared in June, when Donald Trump announced that the United States was going to tax steel and aluminium imported from European Union, Canada and Mexico.
Trump’s protectionist measures, aiming to lower the foreigns exchange deficit, will lead to collateral damages in his country, including companies, workers and farmers. But in the meantime, Trump doesn’t seem to worry about analysts’ opinion that foresee some consequences such as “the Great Recession of 2008-2009” that this commercial war could lead the world economy to.
