Venezuela faces a difficult economic context – shortages of food, medicine, electricity, restriction of imports, inflation and low oil prices – and tensions are growing. On May 17, President Nicolás Maduro declared the state of emergency and the extension of the “economic emergency state”, in order to protect the country from “international threats“. The opposition, who has the majority at the National Assembly, has rejected Maduro’s statement.
On May 18, opponents demonstrated all over the country to call for a destitution referendum against the President. Venezuela’s electoral coalition MUD (Democratic Unity Roundtable) submitted 1,8 million signatures to begin the referendum’s recall.
