As part of the 5th edition of the DeVir Meetings, an association of cultural activities in Portugal, Cartooning for Peace is invited to present its exhibition “Press cartoons: state of Affairs” in Lagos, Faro, and Quarteira from 15 February to 31 May 2019. Michel Kichka (Israel), member of Cartooning for Peace, Vasco Gargalo (Portugal), member of Cartooning for Peace, and Laure Simoes, Editorial Director of Cartooning for Peace, participate in the “Humour and Denunciation” panel discussion on March 23 in Loulé from 3pm to 6pm.

This series of cartoons on freedom of expression offers an overview of the work of press cartoonists, pacifist critics of the ills of our societies, who are regularly the target of attacks all over the world. Through the beneficial use of laughter, they are nevertheless the courageous guarantors of press freedom and help to preserve the health of our democracies when it is threatened. Used to moving forward on the narrow ridge between freedom and responsibility, the draftsman “is a tightrope walker who tries to stand on a tight rope”, as the writer Régis Debray says so well. How can we resist and fight for press freedom when it is still so often attacked today? These line tightrope walkers, true infantrymen of our democracies and freedoms, show us the way: through the peaceful weapons of pencil, creation, free thought… and laughter!

This exhibition, produced by the Cartooning for Peace association and press distributor Presstalis, pays tribute to them and reminds us of our common commitment to defending the fundamental principle of freedom of expression.
