Sword dance in the Middle East

Editorial published on June 09, 2017

On June 5, Saudi Arabia anounced the rupture of its diplomatic relations with Qatar accused of supporting terrorism and keeping up relations with Iran. This rupture was immediately translated into the closing of land and maritime borders with Qatar. Ryiad also prohibited flights over for Qatari airlines. However, Saudi Arabia is also suspected to have unclear relations with fundamentalist movements and to export Wahhabism.

The recent visit of Donald Trump in Saudi Arabia and his anti-Iranian tendency certainly gives Ryiad the momentum to evict its Qatari neighbour and to set up its influence over the muslim world against Teheran. But it appears quite hard for Washington, having its major military base of the area in Qatar.

But, on May 7, a new tragedy has added to this diplomatic crisis in the Middle East : the city of Teheran was hit by two terrorist attacks in symbolic places : the Parliament and Khomeyni ayatollah mausoleum. Islamic State claimed these attacks that killed 17 persons and hurt 39. This is the first attacks of the terrorist organisation on Iranian soil.
