Tunisia five years after its ‘Jasmine’ revolution

Editorial published on January 21, 2016

Last week, Tunisia was celebrating the five-year anniversary of its ‘Jasmine’ revolution. Since the escape of Ben Ali, on January 14th, 2011, Tunisia has started a period of democratic transition that received the Nobel Peace Prize last November.

However, the challenges to be met remain serious: rise of the Islamist party of Ennhada, social inequalities, unemployment… On January 17th, the death of a young unemployed in Kasserine has started a protest movement that expands quickly to other cities (including Tunis), given rise to violent confrontations between the Police and the demonstrators.
