The Battle of Aleppo

Editorial published on August 22, 2016

Second largest city in Syria, Alep has again become the theater of violent confrontations between the pro-government and rebels forces. The winning camp will not only gain total control over the city but also a decisive battle in the war raging since five years.

President Bashar al-Assad’s regime continues to benefit from the military support of its Russian and Iranian allies. They intensified their air strikes in the last few days over the zone controlled by the rebels – where 300.000 civilians are still surviving.

The photo of Omran Daqneesh, a 5-year-old boy pulled from Aleppo’s rubble after an air strike, was massively shared all around the world. It acts as a reminder for the international community it is more than urgent to conclude a ceasefire and to resume the peace processus.
