Considered as a “public heath emergency of international concern” by the World Health Organization, the Zika virus which is transmitted by mosquito bites can lead to congenital malformations, neurological disorders and paralysis. The WHO is worried about a new global epidemic: Zika is spreading very quickly through Brazil and Latin America, and new cases have been recently discovered in the USA, Europe and in China.
The risk incurred by pregnant women represents a major worry, particularly in Latin America where contraception and abortion are again central to the debate. Furthermore, with the Olympics coming and already more than one million cases declared inside the country, Brazil fears that the epidemic causes a dissuasive and negative effect on the event.
