High tension in Turkey

On the night of July 15th to 16th the coup led by a fringe of the Turkish army failed. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is now carrying out a veritable purge of his opponents in all areas of society be it the army, the judiciary, the educational establishment, the media, etc.

Moreover a 3-months state of emergency has been declared – during which time Turkey will temporarily depart from the European Convention on Human Rights. Erdogan, who seems committed to concentrating all powers in his hands, also mentioned bringing back the death-penalty, abolished in 2004.

Among the international community many fear a dangerous weakening of Turkish democracy.
