Brexit: Having the cake, eating it and Brussels paying for it

Editorial published on March 31, 2017

The time has come for Brexit, with the Article 50 of Lisbon Treaty being finally set in motion, on Wednesday 29 of March.

After a 44 years marriage between the United Kingdom and the European Union, the divorce promises to be contentious for the two years negotiations to come. The matters on finance, the free-trade agreements, the treaties negotiated with third countries and the fate of the 5 million EU citizens living in the UK are likely to stir tensions up between London and Brussels.

In her letter to Donald Tusk, Theresa May showed one’s hand on the negotiations by asking a « deep and special partnership ». That is a way for the UK Prime Minister to remain in the EU Single Market but this is not Brussels’ cup of tea, more inclined to an uncompromising Brexit.

London and Brussels are now entering an uncertain period that will for sure strain the member countries’ union and the Kingdom’s free will.
