Bolsonaro, President of a Very Divided Brazil

Editorial published on October 31, 2018

After an unprecedented and violent campaign, the far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro, who failed to be assassinated in early September, was finally elected President of Brazil on 28 October, with 55.1% of the vote, defeating Fernando Haddad (44.9%), the candidate of the Workers’ Party (PT).

Bolsonaro, a professional soldier elevated to the rank of general and federal deputy since 1990, is a nostalgic for the military dictatorship (1964-1985), openly racist, misogynistic and homophobic. He will have to govern a country on the brink of economic and social collapse.

For the moment, the anti-system candidate has been spared by the multiple corruption scandals that are plaguing the Brazilian political class (starting with the previous PT Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff). The one already known as the “Trump of the Tropics” polarizes Brazilians… and the community!
